Alaska Caribou Hunting Adventures
At Grizzly Expedtions, we hunt Caribou in unit 19-C. These hunts for Caribou are fully guided, or we also offer a drop camp do it yourself Caribou hunt. The area we hunt is a vast wide open rolling tundra and valleys where the Caribou roam through. We have a 80% success rate on our hunts, with a 90% opportunity rate.
Alaska’s Premier Caribou Hunting Service 35 Years of Experience
Our Caribou hunt is an add on to an existing hunt. If hunting Caribou we will make sure you are in a camp that has a good opportunity for Caribou as well as Moose and Grizzly. Hunting is done within walking distance of the spike camps we use. The nearby tundra ridges make for great vantage points to glass and spot them as they feed along the ridges and valleys. They are usually in small groups of 10-20 at a time. They are very fast movers, so we will be cutting them off at pinch points etc. You will travel to your base camp by float plane landing on small beautiful lakes and from there start to spot your trophy Caribou.
Our hunts are out of spike camps on small lakes. We fly in by float plane and then hunt by foot. You will be spotting the Caribou and then heading them off, as you will never catch up to a moving Caribou. They walk faster than you can run. We strive to achieve a shot of 100 yards or less. Many are taken at 50-75 yards.
We recommend a minimum of a 300 Winn Mag or Weatherby Mag with 185 grain slug. Many hunters use a 338 Winn Mag with a 200-225 grain slug. Remember shot placement is key to a successful hunt.
Many hunters want to bring meat home, in Alaska all meat from every animal is salvaged. So with each Caribou taken, we will fly the meat, hide and horns out of the bush for you. Most hunters only take a portion of the meat home with them. What we do is typically fly half of the meat back for the hunters to Anchorage to the processor and the other half is donated to the Elders in the local native villages.
Once the meat is processed, it is then shipped by Alaska Air Cargo. All cost for processing and cargo freight are paid by the hunters.
The hide and horns are flown into a taxidermist, and then the hunter will work with them to decide what they want done either tanning and shipped or mounted etc.
Our hunts are 10 day hunts either the first 10 days or the second ten days of September. The hunts are either a one on one hunt, one hunter one guide with a packer or a two on one hunt with two hunters and one guide and a packer. These hunts are not for the faint of heart, you will be hiking on tundra, and through wetlands. We advise that you get yourself ready and train for strenuous activity. You will work harder than you think, and accomplish much more than you thought you were capable of. Many hunters as they leave state how much they enjoyed and appreciated the levels to which they arose to.
Many of the hunters have never flown in a float plane, this is a chance to cross another item off the bucket list. If we are hunting several species, there may be moving of camp involved, so you could be moved a time or two. Remember, you are not allowed to fly and hunt the same day, so we only move in the late afternoon so you can get the morning hunt in before you move. You will see Alaska from a very unique perspective.
The camps are done in Alaska Guide 8 man tents, with cots and heater provided. Remember you are in remote Alaska, so you will see and hear animals from camp, and sometimes they even visit.
Also all food and snacks are included, you will eat well!
Many of the hunters make it a combo hunt and will take either a Moose or Grizzly and then add the Caribou as an add on hunt. You will need all tags and licenses before you arrive at camp. This also includes any harvest tickets needed.
For the drop hunt, we will supply the camp with tents, cots, buddy heater for inside the tent and all the food for your hunt. You will need to supply your own personal gear.
